Empowering Women as Leaders Chapters Support TWU

It’s been 15 years since the Empowering Women as Leaders organization made their first gift to support scholarships at Texas Woman’s University. Both the Dallas and Fort Worth Chapters recently donated $14,000 and $2,000 respectively to support students for the 2020-21 academic year.  The non-profit has donated more than $185,000 since their first gift in 2005 providing crucial funding for TWU students.

Empowering Women as Leaders (EWL) is a non-profit organization with the mission to provide scholarships to non-traditional college women to support them through their college journey. In addition to giving financial assistance, the group also works with the students to provide mentoring and networking opportunities.  Mentors work with the students to help guide them not only during the undergraduate experience but also as they start to look for jobs and enter the workplace. EWL members even continue to work with the recipients for two years after graduation.

This special partnership between EWL and TWU is just one of the many ways philanthropic gifts make an impact at TWU. Funding has provided the recipients with not only a quality educational experience but also life skills to help them as they transition into the workplace. The university is grateful for the recent gift made by the EWL chapters and also for all the countless hours the members give to mentor TWU students.

Southwestern Medical Foundation awards grant to The Stroke Center- Dallas

The Stroke Center - Dallas has received a $20,000 grant from the Southwestern Medical Foundation. The Stroke Center, established in 1992, serves as a hub for groundbreaking research and   as a training site for stroke rehabilitation.  Clients are able to receive most current treatment programs at little or no charge. This gift will allow the center to continue to provide rehabilitation services to the community. A $10,000 scholarship grant provides funding for clients who are unable to make personal contributions. The other $10,000 will be used for programmatic needs for teletherapy services. This fall the center plans to provide a combination of face-to-face and teletherapy to their clients allowing for critical clinical assessment and intervention experiences for graduate speech-pathology students.

Southwestern Medical Foundation has generously supported the Stroke Center since 1994. Thanks to private support the center has been able to expand services over the years to include treating clients with right hemisphere lesions, traumatic brain injury and primary progressive aphasia.  Last year, 46 individuals received 5,253 hours of clinical treatment in language, cognitive, motor speech, and swallowing disorder. Texas Woman's University is grateful for the support and continued partnership with Southwestern Medical Foundation.
